Pledge Allegiance to Local Food!
Local Food Pledge
Local Food is food produced within the "local foodshed' in the Central Ohio River Valley Watershed within 100 miles of Cincinnati.
Making a 10% shift in buying or producing local food does not mean all of your food has to be local. It just means shifting what you currently eat to include 10% more locally grown and/or produced food.

If 10% of the regional population takes the pledge it will result in over $49,000,000 infused into the local economy and 544 local jobs!  Plus, it's better for the environment and a healthier option.

Click here to take the Pledge and learn more about it and Green Umbrella.

Greetings!

We look forward to seeing you at the market on Saturday between 8 am to 1 pm.  It's going to be hot, hot, hot - think in terms of getting a glimpse into what our farmers experience daily while they're out working the land to provide us with fresh local food.  You'll even find a cooking demonstration that will provide you tips on preparing food for your holiday grill outs.

Please note the following for the Independence Day - Wednesday, July 4 market day: Blue Oven Bakery will be located in the store.  The Farm at Holiday Harbor and Our Mother's Garden will be located outside near the store.

Cooking demo
Matthew Buschle of Virgils CafeJoin Matthew Buschle from Virgil's Cafe for a series of cooking demonstrations.  He'll be armed with 2 chickens, eggs, vegetables, herbs, cheese...from the farmers market and a grill.  He'll start with some breakfast and brunch ideas and then move onto lunch dinner selections.  You'll find simple summer fare where the farm fresh ingredients take the starring role.  See the versatility in grilling - take your kitchen outside and eliminate heating up your indoor kitchen.

Netlner's Farm & Greenhouses
Fresh and preserved

Cukes!Kevin will be bringing a colorful mix of tomatoes, squash,  pickles, zucchini, cucumber,  potatoes, and onions.   If their newly designed labels are ready that means a bigger selection of jellies and pickles.

Shady Grove Farm

Nancy's Crepes
See the recipe below for Nancy's crepes

The weather has set a lot of crops back: despite watering, the heat just seems to rob them of growing energy. Be grateful,  the summer squash don't seem to be affected. Nancy will be bringing  plenty of those cute, colorful baby squash, and blossoms. There will also be 3 varieties of garlic, a few baby carrots, scallions and more of the same delicious, healthy goat meat. Some cuts are already sold out, so let Nancy know if there's a particular one you need. I still have rack and leg roasts, shanks, ground meat, and rib, leg or loin chops.

Nancy was inspired by the gorgeous blueberries from Thistlehair Farm.  Here's what she created:
Blueberry crepes
2 egg yolks
2 whole eggs
1 cup flour
pinch salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
Beat the eggs and egg yolks very thin and stir in the flour, salt & sugar. Beat smooth. Add milk enough to make a batter thick enough to coat a metal spoon.
Heat a heavy saute' pan or crepe pan to where a drop of water sizzles when it hits. Grease with a 1/4 teaspoon of butter. Holding pan in one hand, use a 1/4 cup measure to dip up and pour in a scant 1/4 cup of the batter. Tilt the pan every which way with a circular motion to spread the batter out. Cook for 10 or 15 seconds. When the surface of the batter loses its shininess, flip the crepe and cook the other side just till it releases - the crepe slips around when you slide the pan back and forth.
Flip onto a warm plate, brush with melted butter and cover with another plate. Repeat to make 12 crepes, being sure to stir the batter between each one.
This takes practice, and you are bound to shred or scorch a couple. The next time, it will be easier. Nancy's on the farm recipe includes using fresh eggs and unpasteurized goat's milk creating a batter with the perfect combination of cohesion and flexibility.
Filling: 8 oz fresh soft goat cheese, combined with grated peel of one lemon, and 2 tbsp honey (or more to taste).
Topping: combine a pint of fresh blueberries with a half cup of warmed blueberry preserves: or else, just mash and sweeten 1/4 of your berries and combine with the rest.
Place 2 tbsp filling on one side of crepe, fold over and roll up. Place in a ceramic dish, repeat with remaining crepes. You can either chill them and serve with warm sauce, or warm them (covered with aluminum foil) in a 300 degree oven.

Atwood Village Family Farm
Meat, poultry, bread, cakes, cookies, herbs...
Kohlrabi
Atwood Village Family Farm will have kale, golden and ruby red chard, kohlrabi and garlic. Get your grill on with their pastured meats-1 lb packages of ground goat, goat chorizo sausage, jalapeno/pepperjack brats, ground lamb and whole chickens - all from animals they raised at their small family farm in Independence, KY.  They will be baking multigrain ciabattas with organic ingredients-garlic, rosemary/potato, and maybe some other flavors too!   Lemon balm sour cream cakes, chocolate mint cookies will be available for your holiday treats!   Plan ahead and figure out what you can do with fresh cut herbs including rosemary, thyme, spearmint, oregano, basil, lemon balm. and catnip.

Here's a recipe for a super refreshing herbal tea-an idea given to Amy by Mackey at Red Sunflower Farm in Independence, KY.  Pick a large handful of herbs (any will do but we like the combo of mint, lemon balm, and catnip) bruise the herbs by coarse chop or tearing/twisting leaves and pour a couple cups of boiling water over them.  Let steep for ten minutes.  Strain and add cold water/ice to bring total to 2 quarts.  Sweeten with honey.  Enjoy!

JoGreen
Eco-friendly cleaning products
JoGreen
In order to protect our loved ones and our planet Ann will be bringing eco-friendly cleaning products including:  All-Purpose Spray Cleaner. Disinfectant Spray Cleaner, Glass Cleaner, Sink and Tile Cleaner, Soft Scrub, Air Freshener, Hand Sanitizer Spray, Linen Mist, Soy Wax Candles, as well as Tarts, and Tart Warmers.  Each product is made from safe natural ingredients and scented with 100% Pure Essential Oil.

Choosing green cleaning with nontoxic and biodegradable products not only protects our freshwater supplies and aquatic ecosystems it also prevents the buildup of chemical residues in our homes and improves our indoor air quality.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK:  USE A VINEGAR SOLUTION TO CLEAN YOU HOME
It's a powerful household cleaner!  A bottle of vinegar is considerably cheaper than similar-size bottles of brand name cleaning products and much safer.   Most commercial cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that pollute the air in your home.  In 2000, cleaning products were responsible for nearly 10% of all toxic exposures reported to poison control centers.
Use a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water to tackle jobs ranging from cleaning windows, cutting through soap scum, and to remove stains. Never mix vinegar with bleach, ammonia, or products containing ammonia like dish soap) because the fumes are toxic.

Our Mother's Garden
introducing 3 new soaps!
Fresh soapThree new soaps will be available Saturday: grapefruit, lily of the valley and jasmine jewel.  The new batch of Woodstock will also be available.  If you prefer a lighter scent, then Grapefruit Soap may be what you want.  The grapefruit essential oil has very pleasant scent and mango butter is added to this one.  Don't forget the lip balms, body balms and lavender soaking salts.

In addition to the beautiful array of soaps: Check out the new succelants!
How about a zucchini-pineapple muffin to eat while you shop or take home for later?

Craft booth opening market dayHello every one! As your new market manager I would like to say that I'm very excited to take on this role. I feel that we can, as a community, take this great market and make it even better. As some of you may know, I have been an employee at The Party Source for five years now, and was also participating in the market with the artist booth. I look forward to combining my passions for food, art, music, and community and making the Bellevue Farmers Market all that it can be.

I look forward to meeting you.  Please say hello and share your thoughts with me about the Market.

Sincerely,

Tony Bove
Bellevue Farmers Market Manager

Baby Squash

Shady Grove will have baby squash, squash blossoms, endive, escarole, scallions, baby carrots, fresh bulb garlic (California White, Chrysalis Purple & German White), and of course, pastured  goat meat.
The photograph of the beautiful vegetables at the top of the email was taken at Shady Grove's stand at last Saturday's Market.  We were so excited to see the return of Nancy's baby squash and squash blossoms.
Visit Nancy's blog from the farm!  It's loaded with information, recipes, and musings.

Garlic
Garlic
Greensleeves will have California Select garlic at the market on Saturday.  The Super Select size bulbs are 3" across; the cloves are so large that the bulb wrapper splits--absolutely fantastic for roasting!  They will also have Chesnok Red garlic, more spicy and modest in size, as well as fresh kale and the assortments of jams, mustards, pickled asparagus, soaps, and cheeses.

Everyone has their way of roasting garlic, but here's an idea from the market.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F

Bursting with blueberries!
Blueberries
Get them while you can - blueberries!  They're coming on strong, so there's probably only a week to a week and a half more of the season.

Vicky will also have plums, rhubarb, kale, squash blossoms, zucchini, the last of the snow peas, arugula, eggs, garlic, new potatoes, and beets.  For the first time, she'll be bringing Caraflex cabbage - an Asian pointed-head cabbage.

When the sun is high in the sky Vicky heads indoors to bake.  This Saturday she'll have lemon verbena muffins, blackberry cobbler (regular and small sizes), as well as blueberry and peach cobblers.

Here's a delightful summer cocktail using blueberries and basil from the market and gin from The Party Source submitted by Tony, the farmers market manager:

1.5 oz. Hendricks gin
6 to 12 blueberries pending on size and desired taste
4 to 6 basil leafs pending on size and desired taste
Club soda

Place gin, blueberries, and basil in blender or food processor, and blend for just a few seconds, just enough to coarsely chop the ingredients.   Now fill a rocks glass with ice and pour the mixture over the ice. Top with club soda and garnish with a basil leaf. Next enjoy this great summer drink with friends.
